Definitions Explained Better Than I Ever Could.

racismschool:

This is an exert from the article Why There’s No Such Thing as Reverse Racism. It is a fantastic article and I encourage you to read it in it’s entirety. For now, I want to highlight the explanation/definition of three specific words.

Prejudice is an irrational feeling of dislike for a person or group of persons, usually based on stereotype.  Virtually everyone feels some sort of prejudice, whether it’s for an ethnic group, or for a religious group, or for a type of person like blondes or fat people or tall people.  The important thing is they just don’t like them — in short, prejudice is a feeling, a belief.  You can be prejudiced, but still be a fair person if you’re careful not to act on your irrational dislike.

Discrimination takes place the moment a person acts on prejudice.  This describes those moments when one individual decides not to give another individual a job because of, say, their race or their religious orientation.  Or even because of their looks (there’s a lot of hiring discrimination against “unattractive” women, for example).  You can discriminate, individually, against any person or group, if you’re in a position of power over the person you want to discriminate against.  White people can discriminate against black people, and black people can discriminate against white people if, for example, one is the interviewer and the other is the person being interviewed.

Racism, however, describes patterns of discrimination that are institutionalized as “normal” throughout an entire culture. It’s based on an ideological belief that one “race” is somehow better than another “race”.  It’s not one person discriminating at this point, but a whole population operating in a social structure that actually makes it difficult for a person not to discriminate.

The fact that people don’t think you can be racist to white people or sexist to men is idiotic.

Ummm

No. you can’t be racist to white people.

You’re confusing racism with prejudice and discrimination. Racism is a system built to deprive POC of power.

Educate yourselves. Read this article.

There’s no such thing as racism against white people.

And misogyny is so freaking pervasive that misandry shouldn’t even be a blip on the map. This is like a million to one. I’m not saying misandry isn’t wrong. Just that it is not a societal problem with tons of internalization all over the world.

Think women have achieved equality? Think again.

I just wanted to say that #7 and #8 were like my entire childhood.  I still strongly dislike my dad’s side of the family for constantly imposing their sexist beliefs and behaviors on me.

#7, so frequently.

i keep noticing that the way women are written in scripted tv and film that female characters will insult other female characters by saying “you’re driving like a girl” or “come on already, stop being such a girl” as if girl equals weak and incompetent and even girls aren’t supposed to be this “other” definition of girls. why do we teach boys that the worst insult they can be called is “a girl” or doing something “like a girl?” i.e. the movie Sandlot, which, though of my childhood favorites, still does the girl=insult thing that I’m very aware of. I hope a day comes when I no longer see or hear these things often, and it becomes rarer and rarer. I hope that’s a day that comes.
Another thing about #7 is not just accused of being “hysteria” or “shrill,” but sometimes when I’m angry, men will pass it off as cute or entertaining “aw she’s mad” or “it’s funny when you get mad.” Why? Why does my anger amuse you? Can I ever be angry and taken seriously, like this is real anger as opposed to “mock anger” which always seems to be what men think is going on?
